The Trains
The Museum has the internationally renowned O Scale layout.
The train in the video segments is the New York Central – 20th Century Limited.
A top notch first class streamlined steam powered passenger train that ran in the 30s and 40s. They literally rolled out the red carpet each day for the passengers.
This train was designed by Henry Dreyfuss in 1938 – many experts say that it was the finest looking streamlined passenger train.
The Railroad people loved these trains as well.
These Hudsons (4-6-4 steam locomotives) had all of the latest features for the time and ran very well.
Henry Dreyfuss had developed an elegant, but functional design. Rather than hiding the valve gear – he embraced it – so that it was visible – AND accessible for the train crews and maintenance people.
Many other streamlined steam locomotives had the wheels and valve gear hidden – covers ended up being removed and ‘lost’ so that later on these locomotives looked incomplete.
The Museum also has many different model scales including: G (Garden), Standard Gauge, O, S, OO, S, HO, N and Z scales.
Toy trains are also represented from different manufacturers including: Lionel, American Flyer, Marklin and others. Thomas the Tank trains are also exhibited.
The Twin City Model Railroad Museum was located at Bandana Square in St. Paul.
Subsequently, in 2016, the Museum had to move – it is now at a location near University Avenue near the old Amtrak Station.
