I ran my fastest G-scale locomotive on a layout of tracks through my house, and he’s so fast that his wheels squealed around some of the tight curves in the layout. When I put a GoPro on the roof of the train, it changed his center of gravity so much that he rolled over around one of the curves!
Toby the tram engine from Thomas and Friends is built like a brick, but he really goes fast. Compared to the other G scale model trains in my collection, he easily beats them all in a race. See my race video at to see for yourself. I’ve got a big collection of 19 of these G-scale model trains, and run them indoors and outdoors and all around my house and yard.
This is a short video compared to many of my other model train videos, but if you like watching model trains on YouTube you’ll probably find it fun. One of my favorite parts of this video is where I do one long continuous shot of Toby making two laps around the layout. When you watch that part of the video, try to figure out how I got the camera to stay in front of Toby like that as he quickly sped from room to room in my house. It wasn’t easy! If you have model trains of your own, try getting a shot like that with a video camera or cell phone and see for yourself how hard it is!
