Welcome to Beijiao, an HO Chinese Model Railway as it appeared at Alexandra Palace for the London Festival Of Railway Modelling in 2022. Paul Stapleton was inspired to build it after many trips he and his friends took to China to photograph the last days of steam between 1993 and 2015.
Set on the outskirts of the city, Beijiao features the more industrial side of China that the tourists rarely see. With many industries relying on the railway it’s a layout that rarely stops moving, with a mixture of steam and diesel trains passing through the busy scene.
Beijiao captures the atmosphere of industrial China very well and the attention to detail on the layout is phenomenal, with high blocks of flats dominating the scene, trucks moving back and forth along the road and even representations of Paul and his friends taking photos of the passing steam trains before jumping back in the car.
With so many picturesque British themed layouts all blending into one at exhibitions, Beijiao definitely breaks the mould and once seen it isn’t a model railway you’re likely to forget.
Thanks for watching 😃
