I’m building the searchlight signals for my HO scale model railroad using Showcase Miniatures signal kits. Instead of paying $10 USD per LED, I opted to buy the LEDs in bulk and solder on my own leads which saved me well over $300.00.
If this is something you’re interested in doing, this how to video will show you ,step by step, how I go about soldering on the 4 leads to these tri-color LEDs from Kingbright.
These are the LEDs I used, I ordered them from Digi-Key electronics. They were roughly 1.30 CAD/LED which is over ten times cheaper than the Richmond Electronics ones from Showcase Miniatures.
MATERIAL LISTKingbright Tri-Color SMD LEDs (see link)
#36 magnet wire
Enamel based clear nail polish
Soldering iron capable of high heat (300W or better)
Fun tack/sticky tack whatever you call it…
