If you have a narrow shelf layout or like doing switching work, then having lots of scenery might not be as important to you as having more track for you trains.
Buildings and structures can use up a lot of space that could otherwise be used for more yard operations or busy sidings.
However, there are some clever ways of including more scenery and structures without compromising on the amount of track you want. Here are the options…
3D BUILDINGS typically have at least 4 sides plus a roof, and are designed to be viewed from all angles. When done well, they look great, but do require a fair amount of space.
By comparison, LOW RELIEF BUILDINGS are space-savers, because they fit directly against a backdrop. A low relief building will usually have just 3 sides and part of a roof showing, but when viewed front or side on, it will still give the illusion of a 3D building that stretches full depth.
FLATS is the term given to buildings with just the frontage visible. They take up even less room, because just the frontage is glued onto the backdrop. To give the illusion of dimension, a “flat” can be glued on to foam board, corflute, plywood, masonite, or cardboard… with the thin edges painted in a matt color.
Low relief buildings are a popular choice because they take up minimal layout space, but still give the illusion of a scene stretching into the distance. You can make your own low relief buildings from “photo-realistic” plans you download and print. They work out much cheaper than buying a plastic kit and chopping it down to size. The plan designs can be strengthened by gluing them on to foam board, card, or corflute (which you can get cheap from a DIY store). So, they CAN be made very strong, and look incredibly real when constructed.
I’ll show you some examples…
