I spent four hours setting up this temporary garden railway layout in my backyard, ran trains on it for five or six hours, and then put it all away again! For me, the most fun part of playing with model trains is creating a new, unique layout each time I use my G-scale trains.
Most of the model train videos on my YouTube channel show my trains running indoors… and a question I frequently get is “why don’t you just build a garden railway?” What you see here is as close as I’m going to get!
Featured in the video are G scale trains from LGB and MTH Trains. These are hugely bigger than the most popular type of model trains, HO scale, which you would never be able to set up on top of a lawn like this. To do it with G-scale, I had to set my lawnmower at its lowest cutting height, to keep the grass as low as possible… so not to interfere with the trains on the tracks.
A few shots in the video were created using a DJI Mavic Mini drone. Most of the other shots were done with a GoPro Hero8 Black, and a few were shot with a Canon EOS 80D DSLR camera.
