In this special multi product review, Dan takes a look a four Southern Pacific SD45R locomotives from ScaleTrains.
SP’s SD45Rs were rebuilt from older Southern Pacific and Cotton Belt SD45s between 1979 and 1986.
The ScaleTrains model represents classes EF636LR-1 and -2, numbered 7489 through 7536. All of these units were upgraded in 1984, and many lasted in service on the SP until the UP merger. Union Pacific did not hang onto the units for long. Some later ended up as lease units or working for other railroads.
These new ScaleTrains locomotives have it all – prototype accuracy with unit-specific details, amazing high quality DCC sound and motor control, LED lighting, and more!
These models are sure to be a hit with SP fans.
As usual, Dan evaluates each model’s packaging, prototype accuracy, paint & detail, and how well it operates and conforms to applicable standards.
There’s also a RIP Track segment where Dan talks about some of the issues found with the models, and shows how to change the factory couplers to Kadee 158s.
