A lot of people say you cannot use “S” bends on a model railway without derailments. That is not true, however, with the oscillating coaches and the lateral forces it is correct to say they make it harder for a loco with all these different forces working against it. The computer program I used let me plan the “S” bend, not best practice but it let me plan it. In the second part of the clip you will see the modified track and how much smoother the locos run. The conundrum being, ” You need good model railway knowledge to use the computer programs available, but once you have this knowledge you do not need the computer program to design a railway”. The novice is left in no mans land with the computer saying Yes, and the Loco saying No, or I really do not like this.
