Part 2 of the St Lukes Model Train Exhibition 2018. This train show is attached to a church so there’s always lots of hand of God shots to assist the trains. I was using a very small Sony camera I normally wouldn’t use! Somehow it’s done an amazing job in what is very tricky lighting conditions. This years train show was held in May to get away from the heat of Summer. In part 2 we will look at these model railway displays.
JB Mining (John Bell)
Beautiful HOe scale layout based on disused coal mine and rock crushing plant. The unusual scale taps into the 9mm N scale size track that can squeeze a lot of railway action into a small area.
Defty (St Lukes Club Layout Rob Evans) Hornby Live Steam trains were playing up and the A4 Mallard is retired. Out comes the Flying Scotsman to save the day. Hornby Live Steam is a very specialized style of model railway. Difficult to run and rarely seen at train shows.
Bears Ears (Steve Thomson)
A HOn30 scale layout set in the American desert. Like JB Mining this layout uses a small gauge track incorporated with a HO scale locomotive. Often narrow gauge railways are represented like this.
Age Continplated (St Lukes Club Layout)
A beautiful historic Hornby Meccano Dublo train set that’s not showing its age. The magic of this layout is the lack of plastic and sounds it makes as the trains do the circuit. I also look on eBay to see what’s on offer with Hornby Dublo. If your very careful there is some great buys if your attempting to build up this style of model railway.
Legeauxland 2018 (Richie Dulin) This layout is a complex LEGO amusement part that is interactive with the audience. Push a button to see the various park rides move. I revisit Legeauxland at a LEGO expo to see how Richie has incorporated the LEGO 3 In 1 Roller Coaster set into his display. Very awesome work.
Thomas & Friends U Drive (St Lukes Club Layout)
This 4 track U Drive layout features the Hornby Thomas & Friends trains. Thomas, Duck, and Toby fight it out and cause railway havoc. Children will spend hours racing one train against another or carefully drive their trains to the station to pick up passengers. I also investigate the end of the Hornby Thomas trains and look at the prices on eBay related to Thomas & Friends trains and train sets.
Cheapaschips Junction (Chris Fraser)
Really nice On30 scale switching / shunting / plank layout that demonstrates that everyday items can add details to great miniature effect. This layout is DCC controlled and the trains had sound chips. The layout was built up quickly from odds and ends. Best part was Chris was inviting children to us the DCC train controller to shunt the trains and switch the tracks.
Camera chat about the Sony RX100 Mk4 that shot part 1 and 2 of the 2018 St Lukes train show. The camera was set on auto. Considering the difficult lighting conditions and often small subject matter this tiny compact digital camera did an amazing job. The problems I have had with this camera is related to hot days. The camera will shut down on a hot day when shooting video. Best aspect to the camera is how you can plug in a USB charging power pack to keep the camera shooting all day long. It’s not my usual camera but it’s proved to me it’s not bad at shooting train shows.
